Former Educator Now Inspires to Teach The World | Interview with Diseree M. Smith
Hi Diseree, I must say it’s great talking with you again. Please Introduce yourself.
Hello! I am Diseree M. Smith. I am known as a brilliant and skilled
writer. I am currently working on several writing projects for various aged readers that provoke acceptance, love and build self –esteem through self-awareness. Right now, I am the Executive Vice President of MC Lyte’s nonprofit organization, Hip Hop Sisters Foundation.
“Beautiful Like A Flower” was my debut project. What began as a simple desire to inspire slowly blossomed into a book. My untitled sophomore effort will be a part of my mission to boost the self-esteem and self-confidence of children.
As a lady with many hats, my passion is to inspire and encourage girls to become virtuous women and to challenge them to become who God has destined them to be, not what the world pressures them to become. I strive to help other women unwrap their gifts and achieve their own personal goals in life. In 2013 I co-founded “More Than A Pretty Package.” MTAPP is an organization that seeks to assist women in recognizing and implementing their God-given gifts and talents into their everyday life for the benefit of themselves and others. We are here to EDUCATE. EMPOWER. ENCOURAGE. women to UNWRAP the best parts of themselves, their gifts and return them to the gift-giver, God.
I am also a former educator, from Chicago, IL and currently resides in Houston, TX with my husband, David Clay, Jr. I hold a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Education from Grambling State University and a Master’s of Arts degree in Guidance and Counseling from Louisiana Tech University.
How did you get started? What made you want to pursue this career?
I started as an educator. While teaching daily, I came across so many young girls that had SO MANY ISSUES and hurdles to cross. Then I’d meet their single moms who WERE also trying to be the odds, BUT without the appropriate tools. I knew that I had to do something to reach more girls and women on a broader scale.
What are your top 3 reasons your industry/specialty is needed?
My specialty is needed to educate, empower, and encourage women and girls. It is my belief that if we can change the life of girls we can change the world. Girls become the women who bear our future and the future generations to come. If I can get them on track, then our future will be brighter.
Being a speaker and author is intense. What is your motivation and inspiration?
Yes, it is intense, but watching people suffer for lack of knowledge that I hold is even more of an intense situation. I have to tell my story because it is the story of so many! So many young girls and women are still suffering from past experiences. I know how to liberate them from negative past experience and encourage them to look to their future.
Tell us about your average day. #BehindTheDesk
work directly related to speaking and writing, I am also the EVP of MC Lyte’s Hip Hop Sister’s Foundation, which means that I NEVER know what my day will look like. I may begin my day answering emails and handling calls from other change makers and celebs to assisting entrepreneurial change-makers interested in attending our annual W.E.A.L.T.H. Experience. I may have to hop on a flight to meet with potential sponsors or complete a walkthrough to solidify a location for an event that will be held to raise fund for our #EducateOurMen and Hip Hop Sisters Foundation scholarships. Either way, I’m impacting change on a global level for all those we encounter.
What projects are you working on now?
I am currently still promoting my debut project, “Beautiful Like A Flower.” We are also gearing up for the 2018 W.E.A.L.T.H. Experience to be held in sunny Miami, FL.
I balance it all primarily because I work for and alongside two women, MC Lyte and Dr. Lynn Richardson, who believe whole-heartedly in work/life balance. My husband is BEYOND supportive and believe in my personal life mission. My daughter also understands why I work the way I do and am sometimes gone. I currently, aspire to speak more, release my children’s book series and do whatever else God presents for me to do! I have to get the message out that your beginning is not an indicator for your end.
What advice would you give to an upcoming Lifestyle brand or upcoming author?
I would tell them to be sure about their message. Believe in what you’ve written about. I would also tell them to not be afraid because it is scary and can be challenging but it will be worth it in the end.
1. Remember, not to expect more from people than they have the capacity to give.
2. Know that every ending is a new beginning.
3. fulfill your purpose so someone else connected/assigned to you can fulfill theirs.
4. Remember, everything that you need is already on the inside of you! Lastly, take the risk! It is more painful to stay in a bud than it is to bloom! #URbeautiful #YouareMORE
